the backstory
Severe Beauty is a creative exploration of red, and only red, in makeup swatches and looks.
Red has a 5,000 year history in the canon of beauty, with the jubilant tone often conveying sensuality and lushessness. We wanted to explore the subversion of red, presenting makeups, swatches and stacks that speak to the viscerality of the color.
We joined forces with photographer BriAnne Wills on the images featuring a model, collaborating with makeup artist Marijana, and hairstylist Alexandra to build out of the box looks with just enough "smudge."
For the swatches and other still-life, we quietly and methodically styled, smushed and stacked in our studio.
